Re: SWP Startup crash
*UPDATE* when i am uncheck "Sound Enable" under audio options, the game starts fine and i am able to play (without sounds...). i own a asus rampage 2 extreme mainboard with SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio Soundcard, driver versioon is: 6.10.2.6600.
Any ideas how i can get the sound working?

Try changing Sample Rate and Voices to different values, or even selecting 8-bits sounds.

okay, i have tried near all combinations with no success. any other ideas? or is there any other way to provide you more information except the logfile i have postet above?
regards kenny

Just a shot in the dark here. In your Swp.cfg file set:
[Sound Setup] MusicOn = 0
Then rename your Music folder to something else.

okay, long time but i have fixed it (call me mr. fix it):
i have a program for my soundcard (creative xfi mb) called creative alchemie. i used this tool to put the game in the list of alchemie activated games, and it works ;)))))))
and now i have to go and play :D
i hope this helps someone else who owns the same mainbaord as me.

Interesting fix ;)

i use my onboard realtek soundcard and i got the same problem. SWP crashes on startup (after the 3d realms logo, when the voice is going to be played) if sounds are enabled. Thought it may crash only at this point and tried a savegame, but SWP still crashes. Even tried different sound setups and setting my soundcard to use only 2 speakers. Didn't help too.
OS: Win7 x64
Here a screenshot of OllyDebug: SWP-Crash.png Might not be as helpful as it sounds, but the log says nothing and that's the best i can deliver.

mmm 64 bit is very difficult to check and we rely on others to help out. Things you can try is set your sound settings down, 8 bit, 16 voices, sample rate 22050 etc.

i already tried all logical setup's. Then i thought OpenAL is to blame, but SWP doesn't use it, so i didn't even bother uninstalling it.
May be no part of the problem, but to have it mentioned: No setup is safed using the Launcher inside SWP.EXE, so i have to use SWPSetUp.EXE to build a permanent config. En- & disabling sounds has to be done the same way, because the setup made in the launcher doesn't override the saved configuration.
installation: SWP V4.3.1 SW V1.2 HRP
P.s.: Tried other ports to see if my OS is causing the crash but they all work like always. in case of your port, the first version i ever used is 4.3.1 and i don't know if i should try an older version. But if it makes sense, let me know and i'll give it a try.
P.p.s.: The only devide listed as Midi is the "MS GS Wavetable Synth", so i can't try any other. But on the other hand: music plays just fine. Sounds are the problem.

You can try 427 or 428 as anything prior to 427 is not win7 compatible.

If your soundcard application software mentions anything about hardware acceleration, switch it off as thats what caused Vista to crash.

4.2.7 and 4.2.8 doesn't work too. jSW works w/o probs in XP compat mode. And i would disable hardware acceleration for my soundcard if i knew how. i can't find anything that allows me to do so. But would it be this hard to alter JF's source to use different sound drivers like DirectSound 3D/SW or OpenAL?
Edit: SWP is not installed in an UAC controlled folder nor is the UAC disabled. i just got full admin rights. Just a suggestion for people with active UAC: You should add the following to your manifest:
Since we can't have 2 manifests in 1 file and the regular access right part of the manifest would render the program unusable on XP machines (doesn't open and no crash msg), i added "ms_asmv2" in front of each line in the section. This way it's only used on NT6 and higher. Took me a while to figure this prob out in my progs, but MSDN was of great value again. ^^

I've set the game up the way it was told to be setup. But I keep getting a message saying "Build engine couldn't be initialized, failed to load TABLES.DAT"
Any solutions to this?

Are you sure you have SW.GRP in your SWP directory? TABLES.DAT is contained inside it.

I've looked for it the ZIP files & I can't find it.

Actually to clarify what my problem is! I saved the ZIP files but when I opened it there wasn't a SW.GRP file anywhere! Am I simply overlooking something??
