If you are having crappy sound in Dos games on XP like Duke Nukem with out the Port? May work with the port. You need to get VDMSound.

The page seems to be down at the moment. But try looking around and you should find a mirror download somewhere.
VDM Sound manipulates the Sound Blaster drivers on XP. And works a treat on all old games. Now I can enjoy C&C 1 in peace now. :D

Well, VDMSound actually overrides the SB emulation supplied with windows NT systems with far better hardware support. The current url is

Technically it only overrides the emulation supplied with XP, as XP is the only NT based OS to provide the emulation in the first place. Unfortunately, VDMSound + Duke3D under anything other than XP doesn't work, as the CLI and STI calls weren't implemented into NTVDM until XP.

OK, at least it adds SB support to those that didn't have it.

Yeah, but said support is practically worthless for anything using CLI and STI calls. This means that anything we'd actually want to use it with (Duke, SW, Blood, RR, ROTT, quite a few other games) still won't function. Windows 2000 is nearly worthless in this regard.

I haven't tried it with 2000 or NT4, so when he said that it worked on them I just took his work for it.

It "works" in that the sound emulation provided by VDMSound is functional, but the OS itself doesn't support the calls needed to make the games themselves function.

Y'all, I have another solution. Download Jhon F's port. You will get the best performance possible in Windows XP, and there are no enhancements, just the original, classic gameplay. Even better, high resolutions!:D ( I did not mention that is a enhancement, but does not ruin the classic feel, it makes the feel better!)

How am I insulting anyone? I assumed it was a joke because one would have to be an absolute, complete and total fuckwit to be on these forums without knowing about JFDuke3D. Obviously, everyone on this forum does indeed know what JFDuke3D is..

thats just the thing someone trys to play duke3d. then they discover oh wow it doesn't work correcly in windows xp. they search for upgrade patches and might come here. therefore you can't assume that every one knows what you or i know that comes here. and if they ask a stupid question, and i know the answer, i'll answer it anyway instead of complaining about it.
