.desktop item not working, and well other stuff on linux

  :oops: I'm ashamed that my first post is to ask some questions about some tricky things I've encountered.
  
  I'm using jfsw and jfduke3d 20051009 and the sound patches in this forum
  
  a) I use the xfce 4.4 beta at the moment, and have been adding desktop items becuase I tend to *lose* stuff. What I'm finding is that I can't lauch from the menu.

  I get addsearchpath() looking in /home/homedir and /home/homedir/.jfduke3d. I know the path command works for Doomsday so jfduke must work differently. I dont expect a fix but if anyone can suggest a workaround it would be helpful
  
  b) I'm having intresting sound issues, slow and stuttering, but I get perfect sound one times in three. I thought this was because some setting was too high, but this doesn't seem to be the case. I'm not really worried, just wondered what is causing it.
  
  c) I've hit level four in duke it out in DC and the floor has gone all artifacty. I suspected my graphics card; intel 810 is to blame, It happens in 8-bit mode as well, but well I don't know but my eyes feel like they are bleeding. It happens to the sky in jDoom too
  
  d) Why is Shadow Warrior still eclipsed by Duke Nukem when its clearly the better game, the dual use weapons still inpress me. Sorry while I was on it.

  a) you could write a small shell script like this:
  
  

  #!/bin/bash
  
  cd /usr/share/games/build-data/duke3d
  
  exec ./jfduke3d $*

  
  
  and then just leave out the Path from the .desktop file. At least, that's what i usually do :). I normally want scripts anyway, so i can launch the game from anywhere, and not just its current directory.
  
  b) try using a different sound driver. on most systems you can choose between OSS and Alsa. if you're using the script i posted above, you can modify it like this to choose one:

  cd /usr/share/games/build-data/duke3d
  
  export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=<driver>
  
  exec ./jfduke3d $*

  
  where <driver> is either 'native' for OSS, or 'alsa' for Alsa, if i remember correctly.
  
  c) I doubt it's a video card problem, since 8bit mode does everything in software. You probably just hit a new bug :P Can't really help with this tho
  
  d) I always liked SW better, mostly for its level design and the weapons (sticky bomb pwnz :P). I never cared for the alien stuff in Duke, whereas SW has a nicer theme, imho. I enjoyed the jokes from Duke and Lo Wang equally tho, they both got humor :)

  I suspected I'd be back on the shell script route. That SDL_AUDIODRIVER think I will check, although everything is working peachy currently
