I have tested out netplay on my LAN with two computers, and I have found that if both computers have auto aim set to "on," then the game will go out of sync if the client shoots the server. However, the server can shoot and kick the client all he wants without the game going out of sync. Also, the client can jump on the server, and even kick the server with no problem. But if the client shoots the server even once, then, most of the time, the game will go out of sync.
If both computers have auto aim turned off, then there do not appear to be any out of sync problems.
This has been tested between two sets of computers:
Between a
Pentium 4 Desktop
512 MB RAM
Windows XP Professional
and a
Athlon 1Ghz Laptop
240 MB RAM
Windows XP Home
The other pair was a
Pentium 4 Desktop
512 MB RAM
Windows XP Professional
and a
Pentium II 450
192 MB RAM
Windows 98
With both pairs of computers, I made sure that each computer had a chance to be a server at one point or another.
I know that there is an out of sync problem if the computers have different auto aim settings between them, but I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem I've described.

maybe they need to make a dedicated server

Cool thanks for the tip ruler26. I will try putting autoaim off next LAN party.
Question, did you just try deathmatch or coop? I noticed coop mode goes out of sync a lot.

I only did deathmatch, I actually didn't even consider the idea of testing it in coop. I'll have to try that sometime.

Some levels work better than others. Like when me and my friends played. Stadium went out of sync almost instantly, but L.A rumble worked flawlessly the whole time we played it.

Well playing without auto aim is better anyway, so out of sync is that big of an issue.

It appears to go majorly out of sync whilst using the freezer!!!
NOT ONLY DOES IT FREEZE YOUR OPPONENT, IT FREEZES YOUR GAME

Wrong. Entirely wrong. You obviously haven't been playing this game very long, as the majority of the weapons become absolutely useless without autoaim (as in they don't hit anything because the non-autoaim shot spread is too great). Playing without autoaim enabled is futile and lame. The entire balance of the game is destroyed.

True. It's like trying to play the game with WSAD and the mouse.
Default controls and keyboard only is the way! :D

What does that have to do with it, aside from the obvious "nothing?" Moron.

TX, I most certainly dont doubt your wisdom here as I have been at this since Nov 96 and play with the mouse and a gamepad and have always had AutoAim = 0 (off) and dont experience the "imbalance" of the game or am I missing something.
I can understand if you are playing without the mouse for movement and aiming etc then yes, AutoAim would be essential.
Anyways I will stick it on from now on and see what the difference is :)

You are definitely missing something, as autoaim being disable-able has only been a feature in JFDuke, not in the original game. The problem is that weapons like the pistol, for example, are stuck with a permanent 2 or 3 foot range the shots hit. It is impossible to use hitscan weapons accurately with autoaim disabled, destroying the balance of the game as everyone runs for the only useful weapon, the RPG.

you must not turn off autoaim very often. i play without it all the time. its the only way to play (for me at least) i can hit targets just fine.
why do people use wasd? i use the arrow keys with the mouse THATS the way to play (for any game)

I don't turn it off because it takes the strongest weapon in the game (the pistol) and turns it into the weakest weapon in the game. Maybe I'll play with it off if JonoF removes the shot spread completely while it is disabled -- this is the only way for it to be fair and the only way for it to not ruin the weapon balance.

Well... the ORIGINAL game balance that is. I find the pistol quite annoying at times, but it is a very good starting weapon and it can be superb at long distance.
The annoying part is of course when you are slowly being killed by someone with a pistol and you have no idea where it's coming from.
But of course, I have yet to try out autoaim off before i'll make any kind of final judgment from my side.

Hello, Im new to the forums but ive been playing SW since it was on TEN.net...
When it gets a out of sync error its normally because either.
1)the person disconnected
2)1person is using a diff version of the same map or a diff map with the same name
3)setting r diff from the other person.. I.E. Autoaim is different than the other persons etc..
On TEN when u turned autoaim off both people were forced to have it off. If 1 person had it on somehow it would cause this error.

Pistol is the STRONGEST?! I've heard THAT before... and laughed as I wasted the opponent with another weapon.

The pistol is by far the strongest weapon in the game. From half way across the map, far out of the effective range of ANY other weapon, each and every pistol shot hits the opponent.
