When I attempt to run in 16-bit or 32-bit mode, it works fine until i pick a skill level and get into the actual game...
Once in the game, the problem arises.
All the textures and sprites are pitch black. All I can see is the sky, and nothing but black. I can see my weapon and status bar fine though. I noticed, that if i fire weapons, i can see the textures and monsters for a brief moment when my gun lights up the area... Also, in the first duke level, if i drop down and turn the left, that area with the brown door things and the lights above that little area is lit up and i can see it.
It appears that for some reason that on my laptop the game is making the lighting way too dark to see anything. Shadow Warrrior is doing the same thing. From what i can see when i'm firing my gun or standing in that one spot in duke level 1, the textures and sprites seem to render just fine, it's just the lighting is so dark it's pitch black everywhere by default. oO
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1000 2.2GHZ Celeron with SiS M650 onboard (a video chip which i wish i could replace, but can't since its a laptop). I tried that GLUSECDS 1 thing mentioned in the FAQ, but it doesn't do anything at all.
If I use 8-bit classic mode, it works fine. If i use 8-bit polymost, the lighting is normal but i see lines through everything.
Can anyone help me out here?

so there's no way to fix it? bah, that sucks cuz i just recently got this laptop and they never gave me any options (or even TOLD ME) what kinda video i'd be getting.
It can't be that hard to fix it, i mean.. i can run any other 3D Stuff that dont require something crazy like hardware TnL , which includes PSX and N64 Emulation, ROSE online and various other things. Something as simple as this cant be handled by the card?
It seems to just be a lighting problem,t he textures are rendering the way they should be and all, but the lighting isn't being cast right..
I can try to provide screenshots if necessary.

Try this:
At a command prompt, type "SET BUILD_NOFOG=1". Now change to the JFSW directory and try running the game. The depth shading in the game will be disabled but if you can see properly, it's something related to your SiS chip and OpenGL fog.

Are you sure you aren't playing Doom 3? ;)

 THATS funny, cause thats my one complaint about doom iii is that 80% of the game is too dark even with maximum gama corection and my display operating at full intensity
as for the laptop problem have you tried updating your video card drivers? i had the same problem with warcraft iii and everything was dark, but when i updated my drivers it fixed everything. i never believed drivers were a big deal until then now i always try to stay current

Laptop Problem
I have the same Dell laptop as you and am having the same problem with Half Life 2. When the game opens it tells me to update my drivers. Have you tried that?

Also..
also, how safe is it to update video drivers? This isn't my computer, so I don't want to screw the computer up.

Polymost problem in both Duke and SW
You brought back a 14 month old topic just for that? *sigh*
