I'm noticing a peculiar high-pitched squealing noise coming from my computer while using JFDuke (test and stable builds) in 16/32-bit poly mode. It doesn't happen in 8-bit poly. At first I thought it was my internal speaker, but I've disabled it in device manager. I had the problem in the dxdiag Direct3D 8 & 9 tests too but fixed it by removing my second TV display, and I can't seem to replicate the problem in any other 3D games or apps. However, by turning on vsync in the control panel the noise completely goes away.
The sound is loudest in the Duke intro sequence when the picture of Duke and the logo appears. It's quieter in the menus but louder in game. It's not a problem turning vsync on (makes for less tearing anyway, and I get a solid 60FPS), but I just wondering if this is a hardware problem or the code is doing something strange when vsync is off. My system is perfectly stable, I haven't had any other issues.
System stats (no overclocking, all latest drivers, Via 4-in-1, etc., farily new mobo BIOS - no need to upgrade to latest as the fix is for something I don't need):
Just wondering if anybody else has noticed this on their system(s).
Thanks! I love the port. It's strange that I have a nice fast system and I'm still playing Duke SP levels! :D

Hardware. Typically a grounding issue. Try muting whatever inputs you aren't using in sndvol32, and remove that stupid cable that goes from your CD-ROM to your sound card if you have it plugged in.

Hi TX!
Thanks for your reply. I will look into the grounding issue. I don't have a cable connected directly to my soundcard so that's not the problem. I muted everything in the audio panel that I don't need (had a previous problem with my mic-in causing noise from my speakers.) I was also just able to remove the noise by turning up AA and AF to the highest levels on my 6800GT, thus reducing the frame rate from up to 700-999fps to around 300 average. It seems that when the frame rate gets over 700fps that the squealing noise starts. And I just noticed that vsync enabled, while solving the problem, causes the game to get choppy, so I definitely need vsync off. The frame rate is stuck at 75 and suddenly the screen gets jerky for a second and you see the frame rate go down to 60 and back up again. It just doesn't feel constantly smooth.
The game looks soooo beautiful with full AA and AF though! Wow. 8)
Is there a command to limit frame rate?

God my first monitor used to have a similar problem except it was completely random. I would leave my computer on 24/7 and in the middle of the night (when it was off!) it would make a screeching noise so horrid it could make my ears bleed. It also happened when it was on and the only way I could get it to stop was to rip the plug from the power strip.
Anyway this probably doesn't help you at all but I just wanted to share my horrible experience :( I still have nightmares about my monitor.

Are you calling me a bastard? Haven't been called that in a while. :D
Sorry to hear about your sound problems. I had a similar problem with my last computer, but it was my wireless NIC causing the problem. Made it very annoying surfing the net and listening to music, especially streaming music. I'd try a different PCI slot if you're using an external card, and make sure it's not sharing any IRQs.
