Hi everyone...
I just found my old copy of Duke3d and installed it on my 98se P3 333mhz machine.
Should work, I assumed.
Well, everything is cool, except that it crashes everytime I get to a certain point.
Well, I started looking for fixes, and came across this site and several others referring to different ports and things.
My questions: (from a relatively computer-stupid person--myself):
what is a port? (im guessing from context clues and whatnot that it is a way to play the game without using dos?)
what do you need to run said port?
how hard is it to get going if you are source-code retarded like me?
anyway, sorry for my gaming stupidity, and thanks in advanc for whatever advice you have for me.
thanks
matt

I remeber that I used to have the same problem playing Duke 3D on my old Windows 98SE computer. I think there's a patch that fixes the problem here: http://www.3drealms.com/duke3d/index.html.

Yeah, correct. Jonof's port allows you to play Duke on Windows without having to use dos, and it also adds other features like openGL and such.

No, it's not hard at all to set up. If you want to try it out, what you'll need is a copy of Duke Nukem 3D (either Duke Nukem 3D (1.3), Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition (1.4 or 1.5), or the shareware version) and the JFDuke3D binaries, which you can find right here: http://www.edgefiles.com/file.x?id=/edgenetwork.org/jonof/buildport/jfduke3d_20050531.zip.
Once you get the binary .zip file, unzip it, then locate the Duke3D.grp file (which should be located in the Duke 3D game folder), and copy it to the JFDuke3D folder. Then click on the setup.exe and run the game.

Super noob question
so I could either of the two? (the patch OR the port?) or should I do both?
Im really glad to see people still play this game. Its super addicting, and I forgot how hard it is...

If you get the Port there would be no need for the Patch because it would become non-exisitant. So just get the Port from the link in the last post and follow the instructions.

cool- got the binaries...
moved duke3d.grp to the new folder...ran the program.
Got "Missing GAME.CON file" error
moved game.con file to new folder
still didnt work. The port came up, ran through a list of things quickly (looked like it was gonna work) then nothing happened after that.
any ideas?

Hmm.. You shouldn't have to move the game.con file over to the JFDuke folder, the Duke3D.grp file already has the game.con file in it. Are you shure you put the Duke3D.grp in the right folder? Also, what version of Duke 3D are you running?

Is it the original Duke3D.grp from the CD? I think the game looks for GAME.CON in the .grp file.

When you have the game started up, go into "options" and then click on "video settings", from there change the video mode to either 16 bit polymost or 32 bit polymost. Or you can click on the setup.exe and change the video setting from there to a resolution that has either 16bpp or 32bpp.
Also make sure that you have a video card that supports OpenGL on your computer.
