LeBuild?
- I grabbed this alternative to Build and Mapster and judging from the test maps included, and the general presentation of the editor it seems to be an extremely powerful alternative, capable of calculating accurate sector shadows automatically, plus doing a whole load of other neat things I don't think anyone else would've thought of.
For me at least, it'd be without doubt my preferred editor for building maps... if I could read Russian.
Does anyone know if there is an English version of this editor floating around out there?
The homepage for the editor is here, BTW. - I've seen this before.. unfortunately, it's written in VB and doesn't seem to write out maps quite right. Somebody sent me a simple test map created with it and I got no end of lockups when merely looking around the single room it contained. I'd much rather see this kind of stuff end up in something based on the actual editor, like Mapster. ;)
- Question: I don't intend to start a holy war, but what does it's being written in VB have to do with it's writing bad data?
On Acmlm's Board, there's a guy named BGNG and he's writing an F-Zero X track editor in VB. Works like a charm so far.
Remember: no holy wars please ;) Re: LeBuild?
The english version is in testing stage as Lezing told me few days ago... Actually I was bothering him to death to make english support when LeBuild was just started... Note that full 3D view isn't even being planned at the moment - it's just a Z-View - where you can only see one wall (textured) per click. The english release will also be beta - because I'm the only beta-tester and I really have no time or will to test it. Actually LeBuild is good for many things - like auto-shadowing, batch sprites/textures manipulations, fake bump-mapping, boolean opeartions with sectors and other things which I'm really lazy to check out... becuase the habbit of using usual build is greater than desire to learn the GUI of LeBuild.LeBuild?
They aren't related, they're just two negative points I observed. VB consistently results in software that performs slower than that which is written in something like C, and writing bad data is, well, writing bad data. :p- DoomBuilder, written in combo VB & C++(renderer), is much better than any other Doom editor to date. VB isn't bad language you can do some things with it very fast. And compared to .net C, even plain VB 6 is on steroids.
Problem with VB is that there is so many mediocre poeple working with it. - I have this great screwdriver right next to me. But if I don't make enough revolutions with it, whatever I assembled will suck and fall apart.
So yeah, I see the point. Re: LeBuild?
I had mostly intended on continuing doing the main building with Mapster anyway, and using LeBuild to spruce it up with its lighting capabilities...
It's good to know that there's an English version in the works, cheers for the heads up.
